Renaissance painters such as Piero della Francesca built perspective from Euclid’s principles, while modern creators like M.C. Escher used tessellations and hyperbolic geometry to produce mind‑bending imagery. Mathematical patterns appear in Islamic mosaics, textile arts, and even digital fractals, showing how numbers quietly guide structure, rhythm, and balance in visual design. This intersection highlights a shared human impulse: to understand the world through patterns, relationships, and beauty.

From the buildings we live in to the music we listen to, from the art we consume to the stories we tell, I am always blown away to discover that the structures that underpin human creation are invariably mathematical in nature. Time and again when I work with artists, creators and writers who are transforming the way we see and interact with our world, the structures they are tapping into for their creations are ones that I recognise as a mathematician. Many of the artists that we encounter are completely unaware of the mathematics that bubble beneath their craft, while some consciously use it for inspiration. Our instincts might tell us that these two subjects are incompatible forces with nothing in common, mathematics being the realm of precise logic and art being the realm of emotion and aesthetics. But what if we’re wrong?

Marcus du Sautoy unpacks how we make art, why a creative mindset is vital for discovering mathematics, and how a fundamental connection to the natural world intrinsically links the two subjects.

Marcus du Sautoy is a mathematician, author and broadcaster. He is Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science in Oxford.
