Definition
Logic is the systematic study of the principles of valid reasoning and argument. It provides the foundation for distinguishing between good and bad reasoning by establishing rules that govern sound thinking. Logic is like the grammar of thought. Just as grammar gives structure to language, logic gives structure to reasoning. It helps us organize our ideas, evaluate information critically, and reach reliable conclusions.
Formal Logic
Formal logic deals with the structure of reasoning, using symbols and formulas to represent and analyze arguments.
Informal Logic
Informal logic focuses on everyday reasoning, analyzing arguments expressed in natural language and identifying common reasoning errors.

What
Deductive reasoning is a top-down approach: you start with certain statements (premises) and apply rules of reasoning to arrive at a new statement (conclusion). If the premises are true and the reasoning is valid, the conclusion must also be true.
Why It Matters
- Certainty: Unlike guessing or intuitive leaps, deductive reasoning helps ensure that if your starting points are correct, you can trust your conclusion.
- Clarity: By following a step-by-step process, you avoid ambiguous or contradictory reasoning.
- Universality: Deductive methods can be applied to everyday life—like planning, troubleshooting, or decision-making—as well as more formal contexts like mathematics and law.
Deductive reasoning is not the only aspect of logical reasoning. While deduction guarantees a true conclusion if its rules and starting facts are correct, logic also includes other primary forms of thinking like induction, abduction and analogical reasoning that build probabilities and test new ideas. Other Main Types of Logical Reasoning
Inductive Reasoning
An inductive argument does not attempt to show that the conclusion must be true, but only that its truth is made more probable by the truth of the premises. Moves from specific clues or data points to build a broad general rule. It shows what is likely or probable but not guaranteed.
Example: Every time it rains, the grass gets wet; therefore, rain causes the grass to get wet.
Abductive Reasoning
Starts with an incomplete set of observations and looks for the single best, most plausible explanation. It is often called an “inference to the best explanation” and is heavily used in medical diagnosis or detective work.
Example: The kitchen floor is wet, and the sink faucet is left running, so someone left the sink on.
Analogical Reasoning
Analogical reasoning compares similarities between two different things to draw a conclusion about one of them based on the other. Analogical thinking yields probability, while deduction yields certainty.
Example: If drug X and drug Y have identical chemical structures, drug Y likely has the same side effects as drug X.
Summary
Inductive, abductive, and analogical reasoning are all bottom-up approaches. They start with specific details, facts, or observations and move upward to build broader ideas, best guesses, or practical connections.
- Inductive reasoning: Looks at many small facts. It builds a wide general rule from them.
- Abductive reasoning: Starts with an incomplete set of clues or facts. It works upward to find the single best or most likely explanation.
- Analogical reasoning: Compares two specific things. Because they share some traits, it assumes they share another trait too. It moves from specific details to another specific conclusion.
