Biology is the study of life; it’s right there in the name. Chemistry is the study of chemicals. Physics is broadly the study of forces and how objects interact. What about math? Math is the study of patterns. It is the study of patterns both in the real world you and I live in, and in the abstract world of formulas, x’s and y’s. As mathematician Keith Devlin states in The Math Gene, math studies patterns that come “from the world around us, from the depths of space and time, and from the workings of the human mind.”
