Raphael

Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) was born into an artistic family; his father, Giovanni Santi, was a painter at the court of Urbino. After his father’s death in 1494, Raphael took over the workshop but soon sought broader influences. He trained under the guidance of Pietro Perugino, a master of the Umbrian school known for his precise technique and clarity of form, elements that would profoundly influence Raphael’s early work.

Florentine Period: Raphael moved to Florence around 1504, where he was deeply influenced by the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. During this period, he painted several significant works, including “The Madonna of the Meadow” (1505), which showcases his mastery of composition and his ability to depict tender human emotions.

Roman Period: Raphael’s fame led to an invitation to Rome in 1508 by Pope Julius II. His most celebrated contributions in Rome are the frescoes in the Vatican’s Stanze di Raffaello (Raphael Rooms), particularly “The School of Athens” (1509-1511), a masterpiece that epitomizes the spirit of the Renaissance through its depiction of classical philosophers in an ideal architectural setting.
