Why is 1∞ undefined while 2∞=∞ ?

While 2∞ predictably rockets to infinity, 1∞ is undefined because it triggers a mathematical tug-of-war that could equal literally any positive number.
This unintuitive result comes down to the fact that infinity is not a number you can plug into an equation—it is a direction.
When mathematicians write 2∞=∞, it is shorthand for a limit. They are asking what happens to the expression 2x as x grows infinitely large. As x increases, the value doubles repeatedly, growing without bound. There is no ambiguity, so the limit evaluates to ∞.
The symbol 1∞ operates under the same limit-based logic, but it describes a much more volatile scenario. It is an “indeterminate form” used to describe a limit where the base of an expression is approaching 1 at the exact same time its exponent is approaching infinity.
This dynamic creates a fierce mathematical competition. A base getting closer to 1 tries to pull the entire expression down to 1. Simultaneously, an exponent surging toward infinity tries to pull the expression up to infinity (if the base is slightly greater than 1) or crush it down to zero (if the base is slightly less than 1).
The final result depends entirely on the specific functions involved and which one reaches its destination faster.
Consider three different expressions that all produce the 1∞ indeterminate form as x approaches infinity:
[1] This is the definition of Euler’s number. The base and exponent are perfectly balanced.
[2] The base drops toward 1 very slowly compared to how fast the exponent grows. The exponent wins, and the result is infinity.
[3] The base races to 1 much faster than the exponent grows. The base wins, anchoring the result at 1.

Because the form 1∞ can yield any positive number, zero, or infinity, the symbol itself contains no actual mathematical answer. It functions strictly as a warning sign indicating that the underlying functions are in conflict, and heavier mathematical tools—like logarithms and L’Hôpital’s rule—are required to figure out which one wins.
